Ocimum basilicum - Sweet Basil

Ocimum basilicum is the botanical name of Basil. The oil extracted from this plant has a fresh, sweet and spicy aroma. It is mainly grown in the regions surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. Basil is widely used all over the world. This plant needs plenty of sunlight, warmth and water for growth. Basil essential oil has become a popular choice in Aromatherapy. The flowers range from white to pink, depending on the species and attract swarms of bees in summer time. Basilicum comes from the Greek word 'Basilicos' meaning 'king' or 'royal'. The use of basil herb for medicinal purpose is being practiced since ages. Basil is a wonderful analgesic. It works wonders in alleviating headache. Basil essential oil is a fabulous antidepressant and is also resorted to for its antibacterial and antifungal properties

Basil oil is, thin fluid that is a light lemony or yellowish-green in color. Its aroma is sweet and fresh, slightly spicy, with an undertone that is lightly balsamic.

The elements that impart the characteristic flavor and aroma to basil are: a-pinene, camphene, b-pinene, myrcene, limonene, cis-ocimene, camphor, linalool, methyl chavicol, y-terpineol, citronellol, geraniol, methyl cinnamate and eugenol.

In aromatherapy, basil essential oil massage is given to calm down the mind and get rid of tensions that have occupied the mind. It is one of the most rejuvenating experiences that truly cheer the heart. Its refreshing aroma provides soothing effects and takes away melancholy from life.

As a matter of fact, basil essential oil’s properties as a neuro-regulator make it very good as a remedy against anxieties, stress, and nervous disorders. It is highly regarded as a natural tonic for the nerves, with the capability of being either a restorative or a stimulant, according to the requirements of the body.

A recommended dilution for such people is two parts of basil essential oil mixed with 98 parts of carrier oil like vegetable oil.

It is also suggested that before using it, a small amount of basil essential oil should be tried in order to test for an allergic reaction or sensitivity. Pregnant women are advised not to use basil oil. Do consult a professional in aromatherapy before using this oil.
